2nd May

RANCHI: There were plenty of personal best marks as lesser-known athletes broke through to make their mark at the Federation Cup athletics meet at the Birsa Munda Stadium here on Sunday.

Sini Jose (women's 400m) came out of the shadows of the elite batch of 400m runners in women section. Sini Jose posted a 53.01s to claim the women's 400 metres, beating back the challenge of Jauna Murmu. This is the first major title for the 22-year-old Kerala woman. The field was shorn of its glamour by the absence of National record holder Manjeet Kaur and another top quarter-miler Mandeep Kaur, not to speak of the likes of Tintu Luka and Chitra Soman.

Sini Jose

Sinimole Paulose was overtken by the ever-fighting Jhuma Khatun in the women's 1500 metres, clocking a personal best 4:18.62, bettering her 4:21.27 clocked in Kochi in 2008 while coming second behind none other than Paulose.

Paulose, not in the best of form since last season, could not match Khatun's kick during the final surge on the straight, both having gone past Sushma Devi into the home bend. Paulose clocked 4:19.09.

Vinod P J

Vinod P J once again proved his supremacy in the grueling multi-event  competition. He once gain gathered 7000 plus points to win the gold.

Meeshma K M

Meeshama K M walked away with the gold in 20Km  Racing Walking event in women's section.

1st May 2010

Sameermon wins gold in 100m

7th Federation Cup Athletics Championship 2010

RANCHI: With some of the top athletes of the country staying away, on some excuse or the other, the first day of the Federation Cup athletics meet produced mediocre fare at the Birsa Munda Stadium here on Saturday.

Sameermon S

Shameer Mon, the 2008 National inter-State champion, entered under the federation banner, took the men's 100 metres in a personal best 10.47 seconds while little-known Manisha of Haryana claimed the women's 100 metres.

Preeja Sreedharan

Kavita Raut clocked a personal best 15:48.19 to win the women's 500 metres in the morning, followed by Preeja Sreedharan who made it a close finish before fading away a little towards the end. Preeja who had a disappointing season in 2009, despite a training stint abroad, came in 15:48.57, just outside her personal best.

Arjuna for Sinimole Paulose

Sinimole Paulose Indian international athlete from Kerala was honoured by this year's Arjuna Award in athletics.

One of the most dedicated and  motivated athlete of recent history, crowned with the coveted award at the right time.. She is undergoing specialized training at South Africa. She is been selected as one of the medal probables  in London Olympics 2012. Her progress in the training centre vouch for the claim.

Sinimole was spotted by Mr. M.M. Amarnath, physical education teacher of Mahatma Gandhi Public School, Chottanikara near Ernakulam when she was doing her 7th standard. She was polished to good middle distance runner by Mr. Walter John at SAI Centre, Thrissur while she was doing her graduation at Vimala College, Thrissur.

Lets hope for an Olympic medal through her in 2012. She can, if she continues the training with this concentration and attitude. Let us also hope the crown on her head doesn't weigh her down.

We wish her all the best.

10th Junior Federation Cup- Explanation to "Press comments and bad breaths"

Kochi,

Much water had flowed under the bridge after the “first bad breath” from a leading Malayalam daily hit the news stand on a matter of non issues regarding the Kerala Athletics team’s travel facilities to Vizag for participation in the Junior National Federation Cup Athletics Championship. The Association was forced to give this true story, since the some of them  are still finding  pleasure and sensationalism on hitting hard on the Association even without caring to hear the true side of the story.

This is what has happened for sure.

The Kerala State team consisted of 21 boys and 24 girls were accompanied by 3 team officials including a Lady Manager. The summer holiday rush had its effect on their railway reservations too. The Association has taken care of this. The team’s  travel schedule was made such a way that their journey  to Visakapatanam was planned for day time. The actual plan was to take the team to Chennai by Alapey –Bokaro Express on 24th May 2010 and to take a night break at Chennai and to continue their journey from Chennai to Visakapatanam in Coromandal Express on the next day. The arrangements were made at Chennai for their comfortable stay. One of the joint secretaries of the Association was assigned for this task  and he did his job well. But fortunately 17 berths were confirmed in the Bokaro Express, and the team members were ready to continue in the same train which could take them almost a day earlier at the venue for proper rest and training. All he members were accommodated comfortably in hotels on their arrival. Those athletes who were not attached with SAI and Kerala State Sports Councils hostels were given  a lump sum amount as their allowances. The return journey was even more comfortable. All the team members had confirmed berths for their entire journey.

Furthermore, the Association is not receiving any kind of financial aid from any government agency,  for sending the teams for Junior Federation Athletics Championship.

One thing is for sure, the Athletics Association may not be rich enough to pay a handsome pocket money to its athletes, but they are flexing all their muscles to take care of their athletes in a decent manner.

Those who breathe fire on the Association may pause a bit to take a look at these half starved but talented, tired but dedicated youngsters. Don’t you think that they need your helping hand too, to bring in glory for our country?

They don’t have  BMWs and Hummers to drive in for night parties, but you can give them a drive to motivate them for a better sporting time and talent!

Give the Association a helping hand to help their athletes!
